St. Ambrose University requested an energy study from MidAmerican Energy in 2002 during the design of their recently opened student center. The Weidt Group assisted the design team in achieving substantial energy and cost savings using a customized integration of readily available products, including:
- Glazed units designed to minimize heating losses and cooling loads
- Efficient lighting design, occupancy controls and natural light harvesting
- High-efficiency heating and cooling systems
- Fan system controls upgrades
- Energy-saving mechanical ventilation controls
The Rogalski Center was field verified in 2004. Based upon the energy model and the field verification results, the project has the potential to save:
- $27,000 per year
- 145 peak kilowatt electrical demand
- 400 MWh of electrical consumption
These values represent about 25%-30% savings in energy cost and energy use savings when compared with minimum State Energy Code design standards. In addition, with MidAmerican Energy's custom incentive included, the simple payback for these energy conservation investments is roughly 5 years.
